There is really nothing so great as a song that's a one-hit wonder. I always had a special place in my heart for them, because I felt it truly represented the American Dream. The chance that, no matter how bad the majority of your work was or how much you would toil away in anonymity day after day with no results, that there is a fleeting chance that you could fall ass backwards into a hit that could change your life. I think in many walks of life that a dream that keeps people going from day to day, daring to dream that maybe if everything falls right you could have that one day in the sun.
So what's your favorite? Everyone has one. It was super hard for me to decide as I really have many that I consider to be some of the greatest bangers of all time. I couldn't pick just one, and since i'm writing this and get to make the rules, I picked three.
- Macarena by Los Del Rio. This came during the greatest year in history (1996) and was absolute bonkers during my middle school dances. Plus since it was choreographed you could get out there and dance and not feel awkward if you didn't have a group or a girl to dance with.
- Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. Is there really any need to explain this? If One-Hit Wonders were a corporation, this song would be the marketing director.
- Breakfast at Tiffany's by Deep Blue Something. One of my favorites 90's songs of all time. It actually has a very wistful and pitiable message. Poor guy was never really liked by his girlfriend, and is obsessed with the small branch of hope that they both liked a movie once.
