Cubs mash way past Brewers for series-opening victory Thursday

A grand slam lifted the Chicago Cubs as they doubled up the Milwaukee Brewers 10-5 on Thursday in the first game of a critical four-game series at Miller Park.

Kyle Schwarber's sixth-inning home run gave the Cubs an insurmountable lead as they extended their lead in the Wild Card standings on the Brewers to five games, decreasing Milwaukee's chances of making it back to the postseason.

All told, Chicago notched 16 hits, to just 6 for Milwaukee.

With the game tied at four apiece heading into the sixth inning, the Cubs took the lead on a sac fly before Schwarber's gland slam.

Friday night will be game two of the series at Miller Park.
