Netflix Is The Worst Influence

An anti-smoking group called 'Truth Initiative' conducted a study that looked at TV shows that are popular among young people, and how often they show people smoking cigarettes.

And the network that's the BIGGEST offender isn't really a network.  It's Netflix.

According to the study, Netflix shows contained 319 so-called "tobacco incidents," and that's more than twice the number in broadcast and cable TV shows, which had 139.  Although, it's worth noting that these numbers are two years old for some reason.  They're from the 2015-2016 TV season.

For example, Season One of "Stranger Things" had a whopping 182 tobacco incidents, the highest total among the shows examined.  That's thanks mostly to Hopper and Winona Ryder.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" was next with 94 scenes showing tobacco use, followed by FOUR more Netflix shows:  "Orange Is the New Black" (45), "House of Cards" (41), "Fuller House" (22), and "Making a Murderer" (20).

Overall, Truth Initiative says that 79% of the shows they analyzed "prominently depict smoking."
